It is highly recommended that you check with the town you live in prior to installing a fence to ensure the regulations have not changed.

Apex

While the town of Apex does not require a permit for fencing, they do have guidelines that must be adhered to. For more information visit here.

Cary

Certain street within the Town of Cary require a permit for fencing while others do not. Curious if your street requires a permit? Here is a current list of streets that require a permit. For more information on Town of Cary fencing requirements visit here.

Chapel Hill

According to the Town of Chapel Hill website, fences under 6’ in height typically only require a Zoning Compliance Permit Exemption. Fences that are 6’ in height or higher will require a permit. You can contact the Planning Department at 919.968.2728 for additional information. Please note that additional regulations apply for properties within a Historic District, Resource Conservation District and the Jordan Buffer. Zoning Compliance Permit Exemption Form can be found here.

Clayton

The Town of Clayton does require a permit for fences. Fences in the Town of Clayton are not allowed in easements or buffers. More information can be obtained by calling the Planning Department at 919.553.5002. Permit & Application Forms can be found here.

Durham

 The City of Durham only requires a permit for fencing if the property is located within a designated flood plain or on a retaining wall. While the City of Durham does not currently require a permit for most residential fencing, there are requirements that must be adhered to. These regulations can be found by visiting here.

Fuquay Varina

A permit is required for fencing in the Town of Fuquay Varina. Unlike other towns, Fuquay Varina requires a minimum 2” clearance under any privacy fence in order for stormwater to drain. More regulations can be found by visiting here.

Garner

The Town of Garner does require a permit for fences. Fences in the Town of Garner are not allowed in easements or access, unless a signed easement waiver is on file. More information can be obtained by visiting here.

Holly Springs

The Town of Holly Springs does not currently require a permit for fencing. However, they do have specific guidelines that must be met. Town guidelines can be found by visiting here.

Morrisville

The Town of Morrisville does not currently require a permit. It is highly recommended that you check with the Town prior to installing a fence to ensure the regulations have not changed.

Raleigh

A fence permit is required for all projects inside the city limits. Regulations and requirements can be found by visiting here. Most fences within the City of Raleigh fall under the Minor Permitting category and require plans be submitted with the locate of proposed fence. More information can be found here. Please note that both a residential permit application, and residential plot plan checklist, are required at the time of submittal.

Wake Forest

As of May 1, 2018, the Town of Wake Forest no longer requires a fence permit for residential projects. However, if you plan on installing a fence within an easement you will need to obtain a permit. While they do not require a permit for most residential project, they do have guidelines that must be followed. More information can be found by visiting here.
